One wouldn't expect to find a fabulous Italian restaurant in French Canada but here at Le Manoir, pasta is pretty much the only thing on the menu and it is FABULOUS.
My fiance and I were visiting my relatives just outside Quebec City and decided to re-visit this favorite. Le Manoir is set within a Victorian-style mansion in the Charlesbourg neighborhood, just outside downtown Quebec City. With a heavy load of snow on the ground and below-zero temperatures, this charming restaurant was the perfect winter escape. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, fires lit in bar section and the main dining rooms, creating a beautifully romantic atmosphere. The attire is simple and dressed-down, though it is rare to see people truly dressed-down in Quebec City.
The menu is book-sized, offering delectable pasta selections from wild to mild. My honey prefers the more traditional Spaghetti with Bolognese Sauce and meatballs---softball sized at this establishment. I opt for a slightly more unusual Salsa Rosea featuring a creamy tomato sauce with bacon, onion, garlic and herbs. A nice touch is the ability to choose your preferred noodle with each sauce offering---I opted for penne. Wine enthusiasts will also be grateful for the extensive wine menu featuring bottles within a variety of price ranges and flavors.
For the Quebec visitor who's looking for a less touristy place to dine, going outside the city is always a good option. Le Manoir du Spaghetti is definitely a local favorite with good reason! The prices are reasonable considering the quality, the atmosphere is charming and very French despite the Italian food, and the service is always friendly.
When you go:
- Come hungry! The portions are very big. Their freshly baked bread and garlic butter is extremely good, too, so you won't want to miss it.
- Expect to take your time -- this is a general rule for all of Quebec. Like the Europeans, they do not like to be rushed
- Make a reservation. We waited for a solid 20 minutes on a Thursday to get a table. It was entirely worth the wait, however.
