Nu-Way Weiners in Macon, Ga

Hotdog stand since 1916

Returning from a recent trip to the North-east Georgia mountains, we stopped by Nu-way Weiners. I had seen it on various T.V. shows about hot dog Paradises. So after being barbecued out, (apparently this is possible), we passed on the traditional return-trip meal of Old Clinton Barbecue and headed into Macon. We couldn't go to just any Nu-way, of which there are 11, nooooo, we had to hit the original on Cotton Avenue. So into town the hunt began, first past Rose Hill Cemetery, where Duane Allman and Berry Oakley of the Allman brothers band are buried, then downtown deciphering which way streets and avenues ran which way, we made it with nary a wrong turn. With the iconic Nu-way Weiner Stand sign pointing us to the door,(Yes it is spelled incorrectly but that's part of the charm) we ventured inside, mmmmm, something smells pretty good in here and I'm pretty sure it's not me.

To the menu then, lots and lots of choices from breakfast items to hamburgers and shakes, but I was here for the dogs. Frilly Goose ordered a grilled ham and cheese sandwich and a chocolate malt, now decision time for me, which dog? They have slaw dogs, cheese dogs, chili-cheese slaw dogs and plain dogs. Hmmmm.. "I'll have 2 cheese dogs please" I offered up to the order taker lady, perfect, all set to enjoy heaven in a tube, "Would you like them all the way?" she counters. Uh-oh, what does that mean? The pressure is on as a line forms behind me....."sure, why not" I semi-blurt. What have I done, are there going to be sport peppers and bright green relish like the Chicago dog or have any of a number of odd things I've seen at other dogs joints visited by the T.V. shows. Oh well, live and learn, eager to get back on the road, as we have our four-legged dogs waiting in the car, we take our orders to go.

Not until I'm 10 miles away "rolling down old highway 41"...... excuse me, I mean Interstate 75, do I get my first taste of the dog.....tick-tock......tick-tock.......Well it's pretty damn good, the chili has a texture like Cincinnatti chili but with different seasonings. "All the way" apparently means with mustard, onions and chili sauce, Which is how I would have ordered it anyway. So the verdict...Super tasty hotdogs at 80 MPH headed for home, what could be better? This could be the start of a new tradition..sorry Old Clinton. Like the store says "I'd travel a long way for a Nu-way" that we did. 433 miles to be exact. See ya next year Nu-way!

More Georgia trip food to come.
