We just arrived in Chicago on a Sunday afternoon. It is cold, but the city is just amazing. It's my first time in Chicago and I can not believe I'm here. We left all the stuff at the hotel and ran to the Art Institute of Chicago , in just 45 minutes we saw the most amazing work of arts. (more about that in the next blog).
After a good walk, art, and cold we got back to the hotel and we were starving. We realized that we hadn't had anything to eat since breakfast back in Sarasota at Cafe Americano . The bellman was one of the best I ever encountered and recommended Hackeney's Irish pub and restaurant. It is right around the corner from our hotel. We got all our warm clothes and off we go.
We walked in the neighborhood called Printer's Row and OMG, it is like a movie set. The houses are all so cute, buildings are a mix of old and new. It is just a very cozy, beautiful neighborhood. It is in the middle of the city, but still had has a nice charm to it. People were outside talking and smoking. Couples walking their dogs and many shops close to this restaurant.
Now! we got in and it was just perfect. It was warm, cozy, full of people and very friendly. The place is tight and the colors of the wall are, OF COURSE!, Green, very Irish! We didn't care where we sat. We just want to get some food. We got a high table next to the bar which was full of people.
Our waiter came and she was so nice and very friendly. No rushing, just giving us recommendations of what type of wine and what type of soup we should have. Soup of the day was, Guinness potatoe soup with cheese. "Yes, that sounds very fattening but we are cold and this is what we need." We got 2 cups each!
Then we decided that we just want to share food instead of each getting our own dish. We order:
Apple and Baby Spinach Salad
Tender baby spinach and gala apples tossed in a homemade apple cider vinaigrette, with blue cheese crumbles and caramelized walnuts and we added chicken. Regular size $5.95.
This salad was just unique. The combination of flavors of the vinaigrette with apple and the blue cheese was just perfect.
Then we got:
Grilled Cheddar, Avocado & Tomato
Aged cheddar cheese, fresh Haas avocado slices and vine-ripened tomato on freshly-baked sourdough bread. Served with french fries and cole slaw. $7.45
I'm glad that we split it. It was just great. I never thought that grilled cheddar, avocado and tomato could be this good. Mmmm, I want it again!
After, the meal our sweet waiter share with us the dessert and we just couldn't say no! Pumpkin pie! Yep, Halloween and Thanksgiving is around the corner and you can see this great dish already coming everywhere.
Great place, great atmosphere and it is like everybody knows your name at Hackeney's - If you are in Chicago around Printer's Row, just stop by!
Plus, something that really amazed me about Chicago restaurants is not just the amount of them but also the prices are so CHEAP. I guess that is the best part, competition is good, because we the cuostomers get the best of food and great prices. Yeah!!!
See ya later Gooses.
