Gold Coast Dog in Chicago

A day before going to Chicago, I'm already excited to try one of the best hot dogs in the USA. At least, that is what I've heard and seen on T.V. I google it "where is the best place to eat a hot dog in Chicago" and many links showed up. More and more, I was getting excited and ready to go. Of course, I'm still in Florida and I can see on weather channel that it is going to be very cold in Chicago for a couple of days.

Oh well, who cares! I'm going to Chicago for the first time. In the last couple of years Chicago has been in all the news. So I have to go. I'm already imagining I'm where I'm having my first hot dog. In downtown Chicago, in the cold and right on Navy Pier. :)

Well, nope! that didn't happen. One thing, then another thing and I didn't have the opportunity to eat my hot dog like I was thinking. I was bugging Frilly Goose that we cannot leave Chicago without eating a hot dog. I'm sad, this trip was too quick. After 3 days, I'm leaving and I haven't eaten my hot dog, but thank God that Midway airport has a GOLD COAST DOG.

I literally run to the place and I didn't care that it wasn't lunch time yet, I want one.

There was one man in line, asking for breakfast and then it was my turn to order. :) I order my Gold Coast Dog Jumbo Dog (Chicago Style). It has everything as you can see on the photo. All-beef hot dog on a poppy seed bun. The hot dog is topped with mustard, onion, sweet pickle relish (usually a dyed neon green variety called "Nuclear Relish"), a dill pickle spear, tomato slices or wedges, pickled sport peppers (which was super hot and I took it out), and a dash of celery salt; sometimes, but not always, cucumber slices. Ketchup is never used on a Chicago-style hot dog. To learn more click here.

The services was great, I can see how this guy from Hispanic background is running the show. Getting the orders in English and right away talking in Spanish to the crew. It was running smooth. Owner was Indian. (I did had a cultural shock on 3 days). Specially in the treatment between different culture.

However, my hot dog is what I'm taking about and waiting for. I got a table and started to eat it. I can tell you that the flavours and the crunchiness of the pickle was good. I mean, I never had a hot dog like this before. I took the pickled sport pepper because that was super hot!

It was good. It is totally different to the hot dogs back at home (Venezuela). I mean, all the excitement I had was good, but I guess I was thinking that was going to be hot dog out of this world. It was good. But not something that I cannot live without :)

Until next time, when I will try another Chicago typical dish. The Deep Dish Pizza!
